An open letter to Darkwing from Shemuel

Dear Sir,
As you are nearing the time when you become an undergraduate, I feel it is necessary to orate towards you, making assumptions & generalisations, taking a derogatory attitude and generally being offensive until I get bored. From here on I shall deliver my message to you in bullet points so as to avoid becoming bored.

  • Make friends. They will be important, even if just to be a resource to copy notes from and get advice for assignments. You may have to
    - Have common interests. Develop an educated opinion on whatever you encounter. Join societies/clubs and try things you haven't done before.
    - Socialise outside of lectures. The fact is you won't be doing much talking during those mothers. However, that isn't an excuse to sit on your own.
    - You may well have to go out on an evening, depending on what people you socialise with. You can only drink at a decent capacity or be teetotal. There is no respectable intermediate stage. That doesn't mean you have to get drunk, but you can't sit there with one Sugary Chocolate Fountain for a whole evening. Drink manly drinks. If you don't know what is manly, just ask the barman for one, and drink the subsequent beverage cautiously.

  • Become domesticated. Learning to cook, clean etc. in uni is very important, as later in life people may not be so forgiving of a person learning how to bake a jacket potato or living in a hovel of a room. Your flatmates will also judge you by how you keep yourself and environs
    - note: Do think of an excuse for not coming back home of a night. Not necessarily so you can strike it lucky with a girl, but you can do what you want away from your parents' gaze.

  • Take notes. I don't know anyone who has not taken notes and done well academically. To be fair, I don't expect that to be a problem with you. Do note, however, that in many courses your first year results do not count (as long as you pass) towards your final degree. Don't overdo the academia to the expense of the dreaded socialising.

  • Don't make a big thing of your love of Sci-Fi or online doings such as this forum. Some people will judge you wrongly for it. Talk about what you want to people once they've become comfortable with you, because they'll know you for your personality, not what society tells them is undesirable. 'Don't judge a book by its cover' is unfortunately not a universally accepted truism.

  • Don't be sullen. University is the zenith of your carefree years, or so I'm told.

Yours Sincerely,
      Shemuel

Yeah, probably not. It is odd, I have been laughing a little recently, so I dunno, I think I'm going soft or something.

But I know a few people who I think will get a kick out of this and I intend to show it to them next time I see them at work

Now out of curiosity, is that one bit striked through because you think I can do it, or because it's not as important in the context of what the letter is about?

Erm, it's because you're still living with your parents, so it's not going to be relevant to you.

And you're welcome.

Ah, well, for the record, I can in fact cook, quite well actually and I do generally keep my living space clean, though I've been less able to keep up on that with the amount that I've been working
