What is the music industry, and how should we treat it?

Post by Shemuel on 2011-08-09, 14:08

I thought this was an interesting little article. It could give those who don't usually ponder over the provenance of their music something to ruminate.

I'm a massive hip hop fan and the way I see it the genre's industry or at least the 'true genre's industry' (a.k.a. old school) has been dead since 2005.

As for other genre's and overall music. I don't really pay much attension too.

Do you buy music? I suppose you must rely on second-hand shops if you cannot find any modern music you like of that genre, although I'm sure there surely are some old-skool (yeah, I'm cool!) hip hoppers still going.

At any rate, cheers for responding to what I thought of as an intellectual-level topic. Noone else has bothered.

There are tons of old school rappers still making music.

I ascribe to pop punk, which now is definitely not as popular as it was in the 90s/first half of the decade. I go to shows all the time and support bands by buying merch and buying their records (after having downloaded them first, of course...)

Pop punk's not dead! It just need one band to explode and hit the mainstream

That is a very interesting article and I am intrigued whenever someone goes behind what's going on (ie who owns Limewire). The problem with everything is that people are effected by this now and it's not necessarily the musicians or labels. My dad worked for 7 years for a CD store which just went out of business this march (we saw the signs coming though). Anyways, this wasn't just some local little shop, it was an entire national chain which shut down. So while we're playing this game of pointing fingers at someone else, people are being put out of work and it's not that big guys supplying, it's the little guys making minimum wage. So as much as it would seem like a great idea to start pirating and everything because of the upper corporate ties of people essentially just sharing millions of dollars, it's putting little people out of work, which is our fault because we're not buying our music anymore and we do have to take responsibility for that.

I buy records though i do buy a lot online. True there are many old school rappers still out but for teenagers these days there into Drake and Lil Wayne.. People I hesitate to call 'rappers'. I struggle to find many record stores where I live. I know there is one but they mainly sell games and little music at least worth listening too.

We're now limited to whatever Wal Mart or Futureshop carries and even they are reducing their measly collections

I buy most music online, if possible through artists' websites, or then through amazon. Although, at uni there is a music shop I should inspect one day.

What are people's opinions about second-hand music? We went to a shop that sold albums for 1-3 and in good condition, yet were preowned. I personally wouldn't buy from there, but what would others do?

Well, this isn't for any selfless reasons or anything, but I always like to buy brand new. I just like things to be fresh out of the package as opposed to someone else having owned them before. I don't even buy the pre-viewed DVDs and Blu-ray's from Blockbuster

As long as it's in good condition I'll get it. New or 2nd hand. Beyond 2nd only if I am desperate.
