"The ultimate sign of lethargy in society is through the excess of alcohol"

Thoughts on this? Agree/disagree?

The Roaring 20s were called "roaring" for a reason. Jazz, booze, dancing, gangsters all around.

Re: Thoughts?

Post by Darkwing on 2011-03-12, 13:29

It is an age old problem, dates back to before the Bible even. Here's my thoughts on what it means. People are so lazy they can't even be bothered to find 'fun" or entertaining things to do on their own time, they need alcohol to do it for them. Basically saying, people are so lazy they won't even come up with their own pleasure, let alone putting forth energy or effort into work or things they don't want to do. I mean if you can't even be bothered to put the energy into finding things you want to do and need a substance to do it for you, that's pretty lazy.

I guess that makes sense. Cause I was kinda confused with what you meant by "lethargic," as in I thought you meant society doesn't do anything period. But I suppose it is true. Except in the case of China, in which kids do indeed drink a lot but spend most of their time playing World of Warcraft and other MMORPGs.

Yeah, like if anyone disagrees with the quote, I'd like to hear arguments against it, I mean is this wrong, is there something overlooked? Cause I'd really like to know it's more than just an addiction for people

Must admit, i do love a nice beer or cider with and evening meal, i only drink if i'm going out to the dogs or for a meal, i also have a drink with my saturday evening meal. But it just helps you unwind and loosen up after a tought week or day.

You shouldn't frink it in excess, but every now and again isn't so bad aslong as you don't go over your units each week there's nothing wrong with it. Plus it's engrained in our culture.

Yeah, agree with Philly. There's nothing wrong with it. It's just... Lazy. Like, a really lazy and risky way to have fun (STD's, accidental pregnancy, fucking some random creep that took advantage of you being drunk, rape, getting in a car and killing someone/dying, the risk for pretty much everything inreases since you lose some of your common sence if you get too hammered).

I personally don't drink and probably won't even after I reach legal age and move out, but if someone else wants to, you know, girlfriend, roommate, friend or whatever, I won't mind.

I don't know what some of you have been smoking, but is it not noticeable that going for a drink = socialising with people? Doing anything collectively with people gives you a shared bond.
Laziness only comes from some drugs (although this comment isn't directed to your comment on lethargy, DW)
Generally, I only drink until I'm tipsy. Yes, to be honest I have had difficulty sometimes being as fluid in conversation as others and the alcohol helps relax you. Things are quite different now, but it's an enjoyable experience all the same. Might be because I very rarely get hangovers (I'm one of those people [yes, twats])
To be honest, the ultimate sign of lethargy in society? Nooo, I'd suggest something like lack of compassion for those in peril around the world, or the inability to stop poverty, or damage to our environs

But before I finish my points as what Americans call a 'jock', I'd like to say of course you don't have to, many people don't. But consider heading down to a local pub and have a couple of pints with friends.

Sorry Alka (?), DW and others, I have great respect for your choice.

Re: Thoughts?

Post by Darkwing on 2011-03-13, 21:57

Well think of it like this, when it says ultimate, it means like base. Like the easiest thing to do for yourself is basically entertain yourself/have fun, so if you're too lazy to do that, you're too lazy to do those other things you mentioned. That what I gather from it. I dunno, it's good to see another opinion because it's very easy for someone like me to be harsh towards getting hammered all the time because I don't do it. But if you can't remember it the next day, how strong is that common bond of being together?

Re: Thoughts?

Post by Darkwing on 2011-03-13, 22:07

I'm not sure, I guess ultimately I mean getting drunk in general (no I'm not talking buzzed) but if you're so hammered you can't remember it the next day (which apparently is common around here) then I really have a problem with it. I dunno, guess I'm just tired of seeing on Facebook every single day that the only form of fun people find is to be drinking. Actually no, what irritates me more (and what inspired this discussion) is that alcohol always takes priority over everything else.

Example, on friday we had my staff showing of A New Hope. Anyways, we needed 10 people signed up to do it. So the sign-up sheet was in the staff room for a good month and we fairly quickly got 10 names. Plus I continually asked and brought it up to people (because memories are very short it seems). So anyways, the night comes and what happens, two show up. It was almost a repeat of my Christmas social. Of the 30 some people I invited and the 20-ish people who said they'd be coming, only 6 showed up. Why? Parties, last minute ones. So I guess I'm getting tired of people telling me "yeah, I'll be there" and then at the last minute changing their mind to just go get drunk instead. Which gets me to wondering, did they ever really intend to come in the first place? If not, why bother signing up? Plus my logic for it is this, seeing Star Wars on the big screen is like a once in a life time event, it doesn't happen often, yet they get drunk at least once or twice a week, so if you do that so frequently, surely you can take a break from it for one friday and honor your agreement to show up.

Yeah, to be fair it's a vicious circle sometimes when you're drunk. Happened to me a week or so ago (very rarely happens, I must add). You're quite drunk, which makes you act irrational, so you're more likely to drink more, which makes you even more likely to drink more, and on and on...I was very annoyed with myself for getting so bad that I forgot some parts of the evening. However, some people really don't care if they get in that state or worse, and I agree that's grossly irresponsible. Someone often has to look after them, be it a friend or a member of the emergency services, who have far more important things to do.

I'm afraid that sounds like the all too common fickleness of many people. Popularity and keeping up appearances tops all in many people's eyes.
suppose all you can do next time is plan for another day of the week. Was it set on a Friday or Saturday night?

Friday was last week's but that's because Friday and Saturday are the only two days we can do it because every other night is school nights and people have to be to school for 8:30 in some cases, so they can't be just getting home at 3 am on account of the theatre.

Like this is why I am who I am. Everyone preaches to me to be more social. Well holy shit, I try, I plan events I do things that people are "yeah, i;m definitely coming, I'm very excited" and then what happens? "Sorry, a party popped up last minute" Like honestly, WTF?!?!

It is and it just makes me more right. I've only ever been wrong once in my observations (and it was kinda messy because of it) but I think we can say it's not just because I want to be anti-social, but the actions of people dictate that I be this way.

Also, watching the Star Wars trilogy on the big screen sounds freaking awesome. Hell, I'd pay full price if any local cinemas decided to do a Star Wars rerun on the big screen.

But I guess everyone isn't as geeky as I am.

Meh, the bible condemns drunkenness, but it has drinking all through it. Heck, even Jesus drank quite a bit. In moderation though, of course.

But you don't have to have drinking to have fun. That's what I think you were getting at.

It was somebody's birthday party apparently, I dunno who it was. Plus it's taken me years to train them not to ask me to parties. The insulting thing is that she was signed up for a month, so I was the previous engagement and according to her, gets home and her BF says "so and so has decided to have their b'day party (who decides to have their birthday party last minute at 10:30 at night anyways?) so she decided whoever this person was over me. Story of my life, I'm used to it and thus most of my anti-friend beliefs.
