Pirating Morality Question

Post by Darkwing on 2011-01-18, 12:45

Ok, so here's a questions and I'll try to set this up properly.

If it's not OK by companies like adobe, to pirate and download their software for free, then why is it Ok to buy it on ebay? To further this, I found Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended, Mac Version, current bid is at about 180 dollars. This person didn't buy it, they got it through where they work and no longer need it. So in theory, isn't it more wrong to pay somebody else for the software than to not pay at all? So why doesn't Adobe crack down on ebay? Thoughts?

And another question, I'm going to university in the fall, which means sometime in the next 8 months, I'll be permitted to purchase the academic version, which is only 500 bucks. So is it so wrong to pirate it until then?

I don't think pirating is a matter of right or wrong for people in that sense. Rather, it's a matter of convenience. It's obviously wrong to pirate and to steal stuff, but people really aren't concerned about that because they do it anyways.

Which one's the more attractive option: to simply torrent a program and have it downloaded and installed in about 15 minutes or to go to a store 30 minutes away and have to pay hundreds of dollars for it?

Well I'm not really talking about whether or not pirating's wrong, I'm talking about why it's wrong to pirate, yet it's not to pay someone on ebay who isn't even associated with ebay, who got the software for free in the first place

Re: Pirating Morality Question

Well, when you pirate, only other pirates win anything on it. When you buy it off some guy on ebay, most of the time said guy has paid for his product. Ebay gets some money off the trade, and future buyers of photoshop can always have ''hey, i can sell it off later if i get tired of it or don't find any uses for it'' in the back of their heads when weighing the pros and cons of buying a new version.

Also, photoshop and all those other guys can't really do anything significant against ebay without pissing legitimate customers off really fucking bad. Piracy, however, is considered a crime. You're making use of a company's product without the company's permission, or giving the company anything back whatsoever.

And if you're going to get photoshop anyway, it doesn't make any difference if you pirate it till you get the discount.

That's my opinion anyway.

O_o

Is it even right for the person to sell it? Like, they don't even have to give it back to their company or anything?

But that's not always the case. Like I said, this one guy got it from work for free. So this guy hasn't paid a dime and hasn't contributed anything to Adobe. Yet it's all right for him to get something out of the deal by selling off a product he didn't make?

Re: Pirating Morality Question

Post by Thingy on 2011-01-18, 13:49

Well, it's a little deeper than that. Stuff about licenses and so on... If you buy the license, you're free to do whatever with it. If you're using a copy that doesn't have a valid license, you're breaking the law.

They do technically give permission for you to sell and buy their products on ebay, mostly because they can't force you to keep it after buying it without pissing most of their customers off.

And you do give the company something back... Kind of...Ish... Well, you're paying for a license that was paid for directly to the company, and the guy you bought it off is going to have to buy photoshop again if he wants to own a copy of it without breaking the law.

@ the newest comment: Yeah, but the majority of adobe's users have paid for it, and i believe the guy's work paid for it's license.

I'm just getting so tired of waiting. There's things I could be working on if I had it. It's been over a year and a half since I've really had any good access to it and it's driving me crazy. I don't even know why I hold on so tightly, I mean it's not like I'm exactly the best Christian out there and I don't even know if I'm not doing it because it's wrong in God's eyes

So, basically, as long as you don't get any money out of it, you can take something someone has put thousands/tens/hundreds of thousands of manhours into without paying them a dime to compensate for wages, software costs and so on?

But what if something happens, y'know, need the money for other things or something? Unforeseeable events. And then on top of that, where do I find a mac version that works that isn't from pirate bay or a bit torrent, cause i hate torrents and finding stable mac cracks are very difficult

Re: Pirating Morality Question

Just put Photoshop as the first thing you'll get once you have money over. The company gets money, you get to use their product, everyone wins, no one loses anything. Only difference is that they get their 500 bucks a while later.

Getting a stable mac crack shouldn't be too hard... get a good mac version first, then go look for a mac crack.

well, it's easier to get CS5, just download the trial, but I dunno if there'll be codes for it. See keygens don't work cause they don't generally make keygens for mac, they're always .exe files

There will be. CS5 is one of those programs that are used alot on macs. Getting keygens for mac compatible games would be a pain, but there should be a whole bunch of mac keygens laying around for CS5.

My tip: If you're going to buy it, go ahead, make a favour yourself and crack it... Then, unnistall the cracked one and install the legal one...

It's like I do with bands albuns, I first download their albuns... If I like them, I go to FNAC and buy the newest Very Happy

But will using the PS straight from the Adobe site work? Cause don't they have multiple codes and things that have to be put it besides just the serial number? or Do I have to download a specific "cracked" version of it?

Re: Pirating Morality Question

Post by Thingy on 2011-01-18, 15:38

hmmm... i'm not really sure. Well, let's say you get the standard CS5 installed, but not authenticated. In that case, you'll just download a modular crack, put it in the CS5 folder or where specified and run it. The crack disables CS5's authentification and anti piracy features, leaving you with a fully(ish) functional copy of CS5.

So, basically, just download the standard version of CS5 and put the crack in. Or, well, that's assuming CS5's security is like 90% of game DRM systems.

Re: Pirating Morality Question

I see where you're coming from. I'm now overhauling how I get new music. If I like an album, I'll make sure to go through the artist's page and find their link to products. When you see downloads, vinyls and especially CDs on sale, you often have no idea whether any of that money gets back to the record label, letalone the artist. (Jamendo and donation buttons ftw!)
However, sometimes I will pirate, eg. music from long-dead composers whose descendants will never have even met their ancient benefactor.

But anyway, in your case, just download the thing if you want it, because if you're going to pay for it in a reasonable amount of time you're not really hurting anyone.
If the worst comes to the worst I suppose you could use your Vista.

Vista is a decent OS with bad publicity. If you teak it properly to begin with, it works well. Hence Microsoft made Windows 7 with generally only superficial changes.

Well, i just found it shitty. Despite my attempts at tweaking it and so on. Pain in the ass to use, and screwed with alot of the programs i used. 7 doesn't screw with any of the older programs i use, and has pretty much had a minimal failure rate for me so far.

Anyway, aren't OS discussions VERBOOOTEEEEN or something? We should get back on topic.

I've almost pirated Photoshop multiple times recently. I always cancel the download about halfway through though.

Yesterday I almost pirated a radiohead song, but I believe I subconsciously clicked the restart firefox button on the addon manager, thus killing my download.

My conscience seems to have taken over my subconscious... so cool.

Re: Pirating Morality Question

Actually, it's vice versa, your conscience wanted it, rationalized it, started to do it, but your sub-conscience kicked it.

I should set up a time frame, say that if I haven't bought the program by a certain date, I'll remove it

Yesterday I almost pirated an Asking Alexandria CD and then I stopped. And then I started downloading it again. My conscience is just asking, "Why Bother?" So cool!

I would need Flash to do that. Sure I can make all kinds of pretty graphics like this one:

But I'd still need Flash and I kinda want to keep Flash as a motivator to purchase the software and not keep pirating
