A hostage

Post by Vedic on 2010-12-14, 18:51

Ok i think, whats the point in taking a hostage, per say when somebody has a lot of guns pointed at you, you have no bargaining, card, as soon as you pull that trigger your dead, Now i know taking hostages working to stop a building from be raided, from swat works but that the point of the thread.

Its why take a hostage in the 1st place, (when in an open area surround by cops, you have no barging card at all.

It's called adrenaline. That and depending on the country, the cops most likely won't take the shot because of potential collateral damage. I dunno, I never been a cop or a hostage taker, I only watch movies Smile

If it's the police that own said guns pointed at your head, they definitely won't take the shot because they're afraid the hostage might die. If you're in a building, and completely surrounded by cops, it's pretty much the only sensible thing you can do if you've done a serious crime. Take the hostage and hope they'll reduce the potential sentence if you let the hostages go.

Besides, you're screwed anyways, so why not take some hostages as a last shot at freedom/survival/reduced punishment?

No, I'm pretty sure the cops, even American ones, won't shoot if it looks like it will kill someone else (as in person is holding the hostage at their persons) . Now hopefully they're not stupid enough to lower their guns. I hate when that happens in a movie or TV series. Like 15 good guys have guns pointed at the 1 bad guy, bad guy points gun and says "drop your weapons," so good guys do.

Yeah, that's got to be one of the most retarded tropes in the history of cinema... Kind of makes you feel like the good guys are utterly retarded, and lack any empathy whatsoever.

Exactly, basically makes it appear that to be a good guy, you have to be an idiot. It makes no sense whatsoever! I always get quite angry when that happens. Even in this hostage scenario in movies, good guys got gun, feller has hostage and is pointing gun at hostage, feller says drop your weapons, everyone does. In reality, I'm pretty sure that once everyone lowered their guns, the hostage person will most likely kill the hostage anyways and then make a break for it and while everyone picks up their guns again, fellow gets away. My logic would be, keep your guns trained on the guy and then make the demand that if he/she even does anything towards the hostage, they'll be cleaning his brains off the sidewalk for days to come

Yup, that's why i sometimes end up cheering for the bad guys. The good guys just feel one dimensional and stupid. Incredibly freaking stupid.

I know! Perhaps writers get caught up so much in the fact that the heroes have to be "morally correct" that logic and reason go out the window and they fall into basic writing cliches. This is partly why I like Stargate Atlantis quite a bit. Col Sheppard rarely drops his gun unless he sees that keeping it up will only cause more damage.

Yeah, writers really need to put some effort into their shows... Or, well, the popular ones at least... It's kind of sad, the less talented you are, the more people you attract. I mean, have you ever seen 24? It's one of the biggest shows in the US.

Speaking of throwing logic and reason out the window, am i the only one who thinks the ending of Avatar was ridicilously badly thought out? It's been bugging me to death for 2 weeks. I mean, both sides are going to end up in trouble. Unobtanium must be so ridicilously valuable because it has an incredibly important use, like powering FTL drives or something we can't be without. Earth won't just go ''oh well, screw this, tell all ships to stay away from pandora''. We'll send in a proper military ship this time, with nukes and a crapload of elite soldiers trained in pandoran warfare plus a shitload of mechs instead of the tiny rent-a-cop force the Na'vi (barely) defeated.

And this time, we know the entire eco system will want to protect the Na'vi, so we'll probably kill every single living being near the mining sites, and set up some really heavy defenses this time. And when we defeat the Na'vi, they'll have to give up more than just a big tree. They'll either end up extinct from the orbital bombardment, enslaved or sent off to some tiny barren reservation on pandora where they won't disturb us.

Ha ha, yeah, the ending felt very bland (as did most of the film). As for 24, I've only seen a little bit of it and I will say I was/am intrigued by the concept and want to see it, plus it's a Jon Cassar product and I quite liked his work on La Femme Nikita
