And why the hell would anyone be against sunday shopping? Extra money for the people who work retail, and more convenience for everyone else.

Well for one, it's an inconvenience. Two, it actually generally costed companies more money than they were gaining. Three, it just means the retail machine doesn't stop, no break, no more sunday drives. Now four years later, town's as busy as a Saturday and it's a real annoyance. It's just one more symbol of things going too fast and causing too much stress, or aiding in it that is. Retail really does suck and before if you were a family person, you were pretty much guaranteed to have Sunday off to be with your family, one day of the week to be together. But family is anti-21st century and we must abolish families and togetherness because then we can make more money.

Or you could just, i don't know, make the employees choose if they want to do the sunday shift, and if they do, they'll get more money. Kind of like we do here with most jobs on holidays and saturday-sunday.

You don't understand capitalism very well... Smile

For one, NEVER give your employees more money, you might make them think they're actually important or needed. Giving the employee choice means actually considering them a human being and not some mindless number working for a company that is easily replaceable.

Well guess what... hey never give a choice... Capitalism is about making money... How can they make more money, if they give the people the power to choose? Capitalism is as much as a ditactorship... It just works alongside democracy on democratic countries, and has to live by it's rules...

And that's why Socialism with a little bit of capitalism mixed into it is the best way to go. Here, you get increased pay on holidays and weekends. I thought it was like that in north America too...

It isn't... And in Portugal we're starting to change that apparently... Just the new "Work Code" proves that, since it approved collective firings and stuff like that...

Re: SNOW!

Post by Darkwing on 2010-11-28, 17:28

There's a couple holidays that (if you have worked 15 of the 30 days prior to your shift, did not call in sick or did not miss a shift and if you meet the hours requirement) then you can get paid time and a half. However, at the same time that they implemented sunday shopping, they also abolished statutory holidays. In fact the only day most places aren't allowed to open is remembrance day (of which you don't get time and a half regardless). Now it's up to the company whether or not they want to open on days like Christmas and whatnot. Most places don't, but (and this was before the sunday shopping thing cause cinemas are an exception for some reason) the place I work at is open 365 days a year. We've closed twice in the last 13 years and that is simply because the ambulances were taken off the road because of some very bad blizzards.

Re: SNOW!

Post by Darkjedi on 2010-12-01, 05:34

Last year during christmas and stuff, I was stranded on an RBC remodel in a podunk town in a blizzard.

But it was the best remodel EVER!

Though we couldn't barely open the west door, and the cookstoves froze over, and it was freaking cold, we still managed to have a good time.
The Pepsi bottling company had donated a gazillion crates of drinks to the project, so that made things better too. Unlimited Dr. Pepper FTW! (Dr. Pepper is what everyone drinks in Oklahoma, if you don't already know. It's a cultural thing. Sometimes, if you ask someone for a coke, they might bring you a Dr. Pepper instead. Here they're almost synonymous. Weird ay?)

The food was awesome, as usual. On the 2nd day we were stuck there, we ran out of beef, so this little 5 ft 1 chick went out into the woods with some of the guys and shot a deer. Yum. But those who knew were sworn into secrecy by the cooks, because some of the people there (cough, stupid jacob's sister) wouldn't like it if they found out they were eating Bambi. (Heck, I'd say getting food from the woods is way better than getting food from the store. Would you rather eat an animal that had a good life frolicking in the forest with the birds and bees, or something that grew up in a slaughter house couped up in a pen with absolutely zero living space? Which is more humane?)

After the work was mostly done, and we were on what we call "standby", which basically means sitting around doing nothing. Me and my friend Ticker (his real name is Joe, but we all have nicknames on RBC. To everyone there, I'm known as "Loner".) decided to cut a card table out of sheetrock, and not much later that little 5 ft 1 chick that killed that deer whooped me in poker. (and no, we didn't gamble.)
I got her back later, but it was all good fun.

We played until about 11, and then everyone hit the hay. Most of us stayed in the trailers that people had brought, but me Ticker, Sparky, and AJ slept on the Kingdom Hall floor.

Well.. at least everyone else thought we slept...

At midnight, we decided to hike into the west field. ("We", as in me, sparky, and ticker. AJ said he was too tired and responsible to come.) Which turned out to be not only a field, but a shallow creek and ravine too. LOL

The creek was iced over, so when we stepped in it, our feet went through the ice and we all got our boots wet. When we got to the middle of the ravine, which was quite steep I might add, we found some deer tracks. We followed them northward until they winded to a tree, and then changed directions. Ticker noted that the deer probably turned around to avoid the winds, and then headed for it's den, which was probably somewhere further down on the steeper side. Then, as our eyes followed the tracks, we spotted something else...

At first we thought they were coyote tracks (not a dog print), and then bob cat tracks (too small), and then we came to the conclusion that they were cougar tracks. And they were. (I looked on google when I got home) That was the oh crap moment. Still, the snow had basically stopped, so we figured the tracks could have been there hours ago.

We were basically done with our little adventurous excursion, so we headed back. Plus, our feet were freezing from that creek. Anywho, before we crossed the creek again, we noticed more of those same cougar tracks again. But, we hadn't seen them the first time we came over the top of the ravine. So the cougar must have been there when we were down.

At this point, me and sparky were havin a ball scarin ticker. He's terrified of any potentially vicious animals. (I wish you could see him in the ministry when there's a dog at the door. It's priceless!) I just had to tell him about that lady on the history channel that saw her husband get mauled by a cougar in California, and how he's now maimed for life. Oh, that was good. He stopped me before I could go into too many details though.

Then we discussed who we would let it eat, and who would get to run away. I voted for sparky, cause he was the biggest among us, and plus he can't run as fast as me and ticker. And then we came up with a plan where nobody dies. We were going to have me stand on sparky's shoulders, and have ticker stand on my shoulders to make one big scary monster that no cougar would even dream of touching. Pathetic, and more of a joke, but hey we were scared. And we had no weapons.

They say that a cougar yell sounds like a woman screaming, but I'm sure if we saw that thing, I don't think anyone in the camp would be able to tell the difference between us and the cougar. Razz

Anywho, we got back unharmed, just a little cold. And we all finally slept.

The next day was the last for me, cause the highway was opened again. See, Kingfisher (the podunk town we were in) didn't get the brunt of the storm. Heck, we only got about 5 inches up there. (so i guess you couldn't call what we were stranded in a blizzard) But on the drive home, once we hit the city everything was really bad. The snow was high, 2 to 3 foot drifts on the streets, and cars were abandoned everywhere. (people in Oklahoma are stupid with high snow because we rarely get that much, so they go out in it.) Even with the all wheel drive on sparky's land rover, we slid all over the place.

And when I finally made it back home, I had the job of shoveling the driveway. yay. After that, I spent over a week in the house couch potatoing and growing a beard. (mommy didn't yell at me, cause it's not like we could go anywhere I could be seen)

Re: SNOW!

Post by Darkjedi on 2010-12-01, 06:00

Thanks. But I'm not as good at telling the cougar part as Sparky. He's the best at telling stories anyways. I always have to map it out in my head, but with him, they just flow.

Fortunately, I'm stuck with these punks and a few others all the time in the ministry, so we get the time to perfect our stories, and live up new ones.

A little over a month before that, Ticker got lost with Jacob on a hiking/hunting trip. (Jacob is the one who's sister is all anti-hunting and crap. He's a funny little mexican/native american kid that is currently obsessed with iron maden. Oh, and an excellent navigator I might add, WHEN THERE'S ROADS.)

Like, they were REALLY lost. Their parents had their whole congregation out there looking for them. Haha! When they finally found them, the search chopper was only 20 minutes away. (A day and a night in the cold swamps at around 39 degrees F, with a rifle and 10 shots, and they couldn't build a fire until after dark. Not bad ticker.) Now he tells that story really well. Heh, and I think I've heard it about a thousand times too.

So yeah, I have a really cool circle of friends. I've been through a lot with them, and trust me, they've put me through a lot too. But somehow, we're all still bros. Heck, with a few of them, we've up and said we're like actual brothers. LOL, ticker is sometimes known as the third twin. (cause me n my sister are twins, so yeah..) It's strange, cause he even looks like he could be my brother. Very often, people often call us by each other's names. Heck, at one of my friend's brother's wedding, one dude thought I was ticker. Razz

Anywho, there's another story associated with that wedding that involves vandalism committed by me... and I have to post pictures of that....

(I will tomorrow if I can get my phone to sync with my laptop)

And it's 3 in the morning.... Goodnight guys.
