3DS Max is an actual industry program. It's actually one of the big three (3DS Max, Maya and Lightwave) which are used for making movies and video games primarily, thus the high cost

Blender is very good (once you know how to use it) but it's not powerful enough to be used in the industry really. But yeah, don't get me wrong, it's a really advanced program, but Max probably at the end of the day is a better program

the thing is that blender is free , it can import mostly anything , it has plug ins and a game engine , the bad thing is that it need more time to overpass the commercial software , it reminds me of Firefox , when it started

Yes and I know how we all like free, but sometimes free just won't cut it. I mean we'll see, but I highly doubt blender will ever surpass any of the big 3

that's what they said about FF when it started , and i would like to point out to Vlc and it's superior things , also Paint.Net and Gimp make a very good use of images , this is getting Free vs commercial and i will not discuss this in a rendering topic , the admin might be upset a little because of my derailing of the topic tongue

Free Software vs Pro Software

Post by Darkwing on 2010-10-30, 14:10

Well, considering I am the admin...

The thing with FF, is browsers are generally free, so FF was competing in a free market to begin with. As for Paint.net and Gimp, I promise to execute whoever thinks they're good programs. Sure, maybe for noobs who don't really want to do much, just adjust some saturation levels or something sure, but to actually do powerful things, they suck. Besides, Gimp can't even get its dockable windows straight.

The thing with Blender is it's not competing in a free market. It's going up against programs in the 3500 dollar range, programs that are designed to mimic realism right down to the tiniest detail. Don't get me wrong, I've seen some FANTASTIC blender images and stuff, but the difference will be that people aren't getting paid anything to enhance Blender and the people developing programs like Max are getting paid a lot and money is great incentive to people Razz

everything can be equalized , the true difference is that if a complete newbie wants to start to do 3d modeling it has 3 choices

A) buy a payed software of 3k , that you don't know how to use
B)get the software trow obscure means
C) use blender

and i prefer C , the thing is that it does most of the feature of a normal 3d and it has it's own game engine , the great thing about is that is available , and in a small package , and the differences aren't that huge , take a look here

Paid software is usually better than Free software... Because when the free software becames worse than paid ones, you won't have any reason for paying...

It's like I prefer much more using Microsoft Visual Studio, Adobe Dreamweaver or any other paid development tool than using free ones... The IntelliSense and other tecnologies not available are worth the hassle...

Yes, but this isn't about noobs, this is about industry and professionals, at least that's why I've been arguing on the side of the big three this whole time. And for the record, a newb should NOT use blender first. I've been doing 3d anim stuff for 5 years and all I can do in blender is move some things around and few basic tasks and I'm definitely no newb nor incompetent or incapable of learning

True, a newbie shouldn't have to start on Blender... I tried, and the only things I can do is build shapes, play with lights and textures, and little more...

Blender is just too complex and confuse for the Newbie...

Now Blender will be much easier to use once a full version of 2.5 is released. I was playing with the newest Beta they had it out and it was very very cool, new layout and look and things were much simpler to use, though with the same power as it always had before

I'll smell it a bit after the 2.5 is out... But until then...
