It had a small problem with the harddrive... I couldn't format the Data partition because somehow, windows made it extended... So I had to reset my pc to factory (again), to Windows Vista...

And, as I don't like Vista, I installed Windows 7... And that's for me a normallly running pc...

Mac OS and Windows are both good OSes... They give use to the hardware, and that's what they do, so lets not argue with that! Very Happy

And, A-BIack Man... Not everyone is addicted to games... And if I had a mac, I could still play my favorite game: StarCraft 2!

well, not really. I mean windows continually downloads and runs useless programs that just make your system slower and slower. It takes forever to respond to commands. The hardware's fine, the OS isn't, they need to learn that less is more.

Well... It isn't windows who does that... It's people who download useless programs, and then hope that the OS holds it...

The only thing I've against macs is their grafics card... Somehow Apple wants the MacBook to have longuer life battery, sacrificing sometimes certain components...

But, if you want a powerfull enough pc to run heavy apps and still have a long battery life, than a MacBook is for you...

Graphics card works fine for me. The new Intel ones are quite smooth. And I'm talking about windows updates. Not stuff you download, I mean all the programs that windows downloads on its own, all of its "necessary" functions.

Actually, most of the updates you do using Windows Updates are security, performance updates, with some drivers in the middle, and sometimes, a very buggy update to check if your windows is genuine...

And if there is a newer version of IE, it updates it...

But I mean... Macs and Linux distros do the same thing...

So, you have checked your Task Manager every once in a while right? You notice how it continually runs more programs that you've never heard of after you've updated and then you do a google and find out that they're useless stuff that windows downloaded? And you can't tell me that they're security and performance enhancing stuff because I check and then I shut it off manually. At least with a Mac, you know exactly what's updating and you have the option not to update it if you want and it never reduces speed or performance

Now I'm not sure how consistently you've used Windows cause I know you bounce around OS's a fair bit, because I will admit, Windows is great in its first six months of use, but after that, it deteriorates really quickly

No.

You can do the same thing with Windows. Control panel > Updates (or summat) > do not automatically download updates. I know that's true, because that's what I've done. And apart from updates to Media Player and IE, it is all security or performance-enhancing.

As for the six month thing, I believe that's only going to be user-driven. You never replied to my thing about improving windows vista performance, and I wonder what you currently do.

You mean running CC cleaner and whatnot? I did that, it made it marginally better, but nothing compared to when I first bought it. Now I don't use that machine much anymore, the rest of the family does. And in our house, we keep pretty good care of our PCs. Dad's still running an Acer XP upstairs and that's been going for 7 years, but it's slow as hell and was definitely faster before, but 7 years is a good run for a PC of any make. Now what really kills a Windows is putting it on the internet. I had that Vista off of the net for 3 years and it ran OK, like I said, after 6 months it started to really slow down, but once it was put on the net, it only took a few weeks for it to get REALLY slow. But like I said, we all take good care of the computers in the house, but it still doesn't prevent Windows from slowing down after 6 months.
My Macbook on the other hand I've been using for a year and it still runs as smoothly as when I first bought it.

oh, here's one for ya. I while ago I installed new RAM on the Vista. It had 3GB to begin and was expandable to 8GB. SO I saw some of the correct RAM on sale and bought it. I installed it to expand it to 6 GB. However, it still only read 3GB. So fiddling around, I took out some of the original sticks and left in the new ones. Still read only 3GB. I've never been able to figure it out.

Wait, you do have ccleaner set to clear the internet cache, right?

And it's a matter of opinion. We have a 10-15 year old computer with XP on it, and it seems slow. But I think that's because expectations of computer speed have increased.

And some motherboards can only support so much RAM

Ok, let me do you a little rerun about this...

Your OS... You get the basis processes:

csrss.exe
dwm.exe
explorer.exe
taskhost.exe
winlogon.exe
And the base services that activate and deactivate as needed

Grafic Card Controler:
atieclxx.exe

You then install an anti-virus:
msseces.exe (In this case I use Microsoft Security Essentials)

After that, you install an Office App, which usually, have programs that run on Windows startup.

Now a comunication platform... I use Skype and Windows Live Messenger
skype.exe
msnmsgr.exe
wlcomm.exe

Then you don't like IE, you install FF and Chrome:
firefox.exe
several chrome.exe (I have 4 right now)

I like Google Apps, so I also have:
2x GoogleDesktop.exe
GoogleQuickSearch.exe
GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe

And as you install things the list keeps growing, and growing, and growing... I already saw people with several programs they don't use at all loaded in the system tray... And then you keep asking why windows gets that heavy...

And besides, I always check the updates I must do before I install them... It's usually a user option...

@Destral... Shouldn't SC2 have a auto-patch program?

@DW... Get a 64 Bit OS! 32-Bit OSes only support up to 3 gbs...

It was because I got into a fight with her that I feared that she had disconnected it.

Yep... For the older computers, DDR1 and DDR2, etc. That's how I busted my old laptop; upgraded with DDR2 when it was actually DDR1

-.- That thing had a lot of sentimental value. Had it for like 7 years O_o

well my PC was DDR-2 SDRAM. That's the only thing I been able to figure though. The package said DDR-2 RAM and not SDRAM, however, I looked on the net and it didn't look like there was a difference, so I dunno

Big difference. The RAM I upgraded with worked for about a month before it killed it. So if the computer still works then you are a very lucky man.

but like I said, I googled it and everything and everything i found said SDRAM and RAM were the same thing, just a fancier way of saying it. It was DDR-2 which was what was important. But they make these things more complicated than they need to be

I just pulled out the package. Apparently, I've had the 2GB sticks in for the last 10 months and took out the 512MB sticks that came with the PC, so it's been running fine for the last 10 months with these 2GB sticks in it, though it still reads 3GB

I already told you! You have a 32-Bit OS! 32-Bit only reads up to 3.2... gb's of RAM, but Windows round it up to 3 Gb's...

However, a 64-bit OS would read up (in theory) up to 128 Gb's of RAM!

There are 64-bit Windows... For example, my laptop reads all its 4 Gb... And my motherboard allows to go up to 8 Gb's...

Oh, and remember also! Home Premium edition of Windows 64-bit reads only up to 8 Gb's... But Ultimate and Business reads up to 128 Gb's

so, home premium 32bit requires like 2GB to run windows alone, how much does the 64bit need? Because if I had say 8GB in there but the 64bit needs like 6 GB to run windows alone, it's not much of an improvement
